Whatever happened to Etcetera after TALES OF ARDOUR AND DECEIT when, what someone rightly described as "ace drummer" Johnnie McCoy decide to take a break from the band?
Well, things are happening again! Since 2010, Johnnie and I began to re-record the rythm tracks of the original early Etcetera songs all over. The old demos of Etc#1, which are the only testament to the original band, simply do not hold up, and we thought we might give it a new haul over. Soon we invited our old band mates to join the re-recordings, so as to get an entirely authentic recording of the original band. The recordings were finished in 2013, and the result are so much better than the original. The old songs have been revisited with Mellotron, Moog, true tone-wheel Hammond, valve amps, better recording equipment and time to care about the details. And not the least, with Anders and Michael playing many of their own original parts on the recordings!

There is also a lot of catching up on music written between 2004-2010 to do, so we are also recording new songs now. With some luck, a new album or perhaps even two may come out of this. Johnnie has begun composing and recording his own material too, so things are happening these days.

And then it is time for a concert! With re-recorded versions of the old material, and a bunch of new stuff, it is time to play some of it publicly again. Etcetera will be back for a concert in Kulturhuset Pileg&aalig;rden, Brœnshœj, on august the 13th 2016.

For those that really like the ETCETERA stuff, I have also digitized two collections of ETCETERA demo recordings, and these are available upon request directly to me.

Time to play the mellotron!

Here is my log book as of January, 2015:

  • (January 2015) These pages badly needs a redesign. But instead of redesigning, we spend our time recording, and that is a good thing, as this means more music! We are recording several songs written between 2004 and now, and the results so far will please all fans of progressive rock, I am sure!

  • (August 2013) The re-recordings of our old material is finished and mixed. We plan to isse this collection with the title "Old School", which seems appropriate, given our common connection to the Aarhus Cathedral School.

  • (December 2010) Johnnie and I decided to re-record the original songs of the original line-up of Etcetera. Drum and bass tracks for three songs were recorded in August, and overdubs have been added for most bits.

  • (August 2004) Johnnie McCoy has handed in his notice, and is therefore no longer the drummer of Etcetera. Per decided that actually he didn't have the time either for the project, so Etcetera is not in existence anymore.

  • (30. Sept 2003) Lo and behold! Today is a good day, for our new album Tales of Ardour & Deceit has finally been released today!
We have been trying to convince a keyboardist to join the band, but unfortunately he would not let himself lure into our snares. So we will continue as a three-piece, trying to get a singer aboard.
Songwriting is going much better now, and there's a good flow of new ideas right now. I think we might actually have enough raw material for another cool album, but it all needs to be worked together to the album to end all albums. The influence of the mighty mellotron is incredible. It makes its presence heard all over the place.

  • (5. May 2003) The band has been very quiet the past half year. Johnnie has been busy with other activities, gigging with his Latin Fever band, and Per has been busy with music studies. And our album Tales of Ardour and Deceit has been delayed by events out of our hands. The gig at Christianshavns Beboerhus did not work out quite as well as we had expected. An excess of duties laid upon me by this arrangement, an incredible number of technical breakdowns and a sound system that did not allow the keyboards to be heard were the main culprits. And then we were playing to an audience of people totally unprepared for what we presented them. Add to this a general writers block on my behalf, and you have a "lost" half year. But with spring comes new ideas. And we are writing and rehearsing new material now. Expect some more cool song to come. Plus, I have added a genuine mellotron to the keyboard arsenal.

  • (18. Jul 2002) Rehearsals are progressing. The set is now in place and arranged for a three-piece band. This is very exciting. We have produced some truly gothic sounds in Ghost. Per has added his Ensoniq VFX to his setup for extra pads and bass lines, and it sounds truly impressive.

  • (20. Jun 2002) Etcetera is still rehearsing. We will appear at a private arrangement in September in Copenhagen, playing Charles Unhealthy Pïctures, Experience, Kentish Suite, Ghost and improvisational stuff.

  • (19. Feb 2002) Etcetera back in a rehearsal room. We will play Charles Unhealthy Pïctures and audition a guitar player. Actually we will start building the setlist for forthcoming support of the new album.

  • (7. Feb 2002) The album is in the hands of Record Heaven. Everything is ready to go from here.

  • (15. Dec 2001) Mixing is finished. We have remixed Stig, Ghost I, Exit. I wish we had known this in advance., It could have saved a lot of precious time.

  • (15. Nov 2001) Mixing has been seriously difficult. We have undertaken an alternative mix because the original mixes of late October was less than satisfactory. So far we have a much better mix of Ghost and the major parts of Stig. This means that we have had to make alternative mixes of more than half the album. Phew! But we are coming to an end soon.
I have also produced a collection of space music improvisations that I call The Cygnus Loop. Anybody interested in space music, or should I just shelve it?

  • (11. Jun 2001) Recording of the new album has finished! That took a long time. As you may have noticed, it has been a year since the last update. A lot of things have happened since then. My Freeport Studio no longer exists. Instead all future recording will happen in Sonus Stellaria, a much better facility.
Here's a brief overview of the last year:
Autumn 2000: Base tracks laid down for several of the new songs. You can reckognize recordings from Freeport in that all organ recordings were through amplifiers and effect boxes. In November Freeport Studio was closed.
February 2001: The new Sonus Stellaria was finally opened. You can reckognize the new recordings by the fact that all organ recordings go through a Leslie speaker.
We have had several contributions during spring on saxophone, keyboards and Michael's vocals.

  • (08. Jun 2000) Recording of the new album has begun! In mid-May we recorded the basic Drum/Bass tracks in Don Martins Studio A, and now it is down to overdubbing. This album I hope will beat Fin de Siecle. Johnnie McCoy is in tremendous shape and plays on all songs.

  • (09. Jan 2000) There's a bunch of new songs now for a new CD. One demo has been put on the Samples page. Still plans to go to play ProgDay 2000.

  • (10. Jun 1999) I am composing even more material. It will contain a lot of huge mellotron sounds, quirky guitars, and some fluent sounds to links songs. Etcetera is preparing for playing a GARF sponsored gig in Göteborg in November. We are also considering rehearsals for making more material for a new recording.

  • (10. Mar 1999) New songs are being composed. Trapped Ghost of Yang Guifei is getting a part II. New piece with working title Cumulus and another with working title Sample and Hold. Lots of other bits and pieces lying around. We are slowly starting to get a live performance together.

  • (28. Feb 1999) FIN DE SIECLE has been released through Record Heaven.

  • (13. Dec 1998) A new recording of Endelave is ready. 12-string guitars, moog, mellotron, cheesy old stringers, Vox amplifiers... This song is for the next CD.

  • (7. Oct 1998) I promised to have the disc ready in September, but now it is October. The cover work has taken a little longer than expected but is ready very soon! Johnnie and I have started working again on new material and reworkings of the old stuff. A version of the Etcetera standard Endelave is on its way.

  • (4. Aug 1998) The ETC disc has been fully mixed. Seven songs comprises more than 50 minutes of music. Now about that CD cover... Otherwise I am ready to makes copies for those interested.

  • (17. Jun 1998) Upon request I have digitized and mastered the entire Etcetera demo recordings from Etc#2 and #3. Also included on the Etc#2 disc is a bootleg quality live Etc#1 recordings of three more songs, that would otherwise be unknown.

  • (Feb. 1997) The Trapped Ghost of Yang Guifei. This is a creepy soundscape. It is meant to be a ghost trapped in the wind. Here is 7 minutes of spooky sounds.

  • (Jan. 1997) Test Rock. Are you ready? OK, one, two, three, four... There goes the standard 4 minutes rock song. I had to test my new hard disk recording gear with something, and it became a very pleasant piece of hit potential. ... Allright, allright, but one is always allowed to dream!

  • Ocean is a 8-9 minutes piece in a slow trance-like style, and with a beautiful Moog lead. I also rehearsed this piece with Johnnie, but it really dates back to Etcetera #3 where it was also rehearsed. Long time under way, and almost MIDI only, but recording of this song will be easy.

  • Aperitif is a hint at the heavy medieval rock style fancied by Gentle Giant and Jethro Tull. It lasts only 3 minutes and is really just... an aperitif. I always imagined this piece as an intro to 'Gongtric Yestacles'. Still only a demo.

  • Elton Toto. It is actually better than its name, and I am really fond of this piece. It has a very sad and moody piano intro, and then it evolves into a proper song. For me it feels like something I could have heard before, when I was a very sensitive young man, but I know I made it up myself. It would have fitted in perfectly though with the music of Epicure

Furthermore I have many tapes with bits and pieces and a lot of great sound experiments with Moog, synths and effects.

Since 1993, I have worked as a computer programmer, and taken care of my wife and kids. This definitely has kept me busy. But it has also given me a good reason to invest in some home studio equipment, and to compose some more, and it has become...

Freeport Studio!

This is my home recording studio. I'm happy that it's there for me whenever I need it. No more hired equipment breakdowns! No more tight time schedules! Everybody should get one!
