The background

This tape was made because there never were any proper recordings of the Etcetera #1 songs. Johnnie and I wanted to make this up, so it was not a real band, but rather a long demo project. We picked these songs for the recording as they were our most ambitious. Dance is a 20 minute suite in three parts: part 1, in medias res and part 2, and Experience is another 17 minutes piece of wild playing.
To make it really good, we called in a lot of friends to help us. Dance part 1 features a saxophone solo by Morten Elbæk, as well as a great synth solo, played by Mads Wadmand, who also provides jazz piano in Experience and beautiful classical piano in In Medias Res, where he plays duet with Elisabeth Ørsnæs on flute.
A number of Xylophones, Marimbas and other percussion instruments were borrowed for a minimalist inspired bridge in Experience. The Cecilia Choir, Aarhus, sang a part in Dance part 2, and you can also hear The Choir of st. Those-that-were-there-at-the-time, which featured Anders Kjærulff and Tage Lutken. We had no access to Mellotrons, so we went for some live choir instead, to get it right. We also attempted to record a real church organ part, but due to some problems we had to leave it out, in favor of an ordinary organ. What a pity.
The sound of the tape is very dry, as most of the instruments were recorded in Tages soundproof room. This room is very dry, and we had no good effects to put on afterwards. I have digitized these recordings and improved the sound a bit, so it is now available in a better sound quality for those interested.
The mastered copies of this session can also be purchased from me, with extra recordings added. See the Retail Page.
